David was imprisoned twice for the Jacobins. In the same year, the Jacobin party leader Marat was assassinated, and David wrote "The Death of Marat" with grief and indignation. In The Death of Marat, David realistically recreates the scene: Marat is lying in the bathtub, blood pouring from his wounds, a bloody dagger sliding to the ground, and the killer has fled the scene. David designed the main character in the painting in a plot and scene, which enriched the expressive content of the portrait and enhanced its appeal. It is said that David arrived at the scene two hours after Marat was stabbed to death, and was so shocked by the horror that he decided to use his brush to record this tragic historical scene.
