《Ophelia》 is a representative oil painting by John Everett Millais, one of the four masters of the Pre-Raphaelites.
Ophelia, the fictional character of Shakespeare's play 《Hamlet》, describes the maiden's last scene before her death as follows: "Her clothes are spread out so that she floats for a moment like a mermaid on the water, and she sings an old ballad intermittently, as if she did not feel at all in danger, as if she had grown up in water."
When Milley painted Ophelia, she depicted the same number of flowers in the scene of her death as in the original text. These include the pansy for vanity, the violet for loyalty, the nettle for pain and the poppy for death, and finally the pure and innocent daisy, which represents purity and innocence, and even contains a sense of farewell. What is striking is that there is no tragic atmosphere in the picture as a whole, which is reflected in Millas's superb realism technique, and what is even more rare is that the truth of his pen always gives the work a unique melancholy and poetry.
