The 200th Anniversary of the National Gallery - 2024 Van Gogh Special Exhibition.

As part of the celebrations of London's National Gallery, which celebrates its 200th anniversary in 1824, the museum plans to host its most spectacular Van Gogh exhibition to date. It was revealed that the exhibition will focus on the artist's time in Provence, where he created the greatest works of his life.

The exhibition is scheduled to run from September 2024 to January 2025 and will feature at least 50 works, mainly oil paintings by Van Gogh, but also some drawings. This will be the largest Van Gogh exhibition in the UK since the Royal Academy exhibition in 2010.

The exhibition will cover Van Gogh's work in southern France, where he lived in Arles (February 1888 to May 1889) and in the psychiatric hospital in the Saint-Rémy-de-Provence suburb of Provence (May 1889 to May 1890). It was in these two places that he created his best work.
The National Gallery of London is the perfect place to host Van Gogh's exhibition, as one of its highlights is Van Gogh's original version of Sunflowers, painted by Van Gogh in August 1888 to decorate Gauguin's bedroom, and is one of Van Gogh's most famous works.

The exhibition will show the story of how Sunflowers came to London in the first place. In December 1910, the painting was loaned from Vincent's sister-in-law, Jo Bonger, and was included in curator Roger Fry's seminal Post-Impressionist exhibition. The painting had a great influence on the British avant-garde and was published as a frontispiece for Charles Hind's 1911 book The Post Impressionists.
Van Gogh never seemed to have considered at that stage that he might become a professional artist, let alone that his work would one day enter the sacred gates of the National Gallery in London and become one of the most popular works of art, and he would become one of the most iconic art painters in the history of art in the world.
